Big Surf – The Wedge, Newport Beach Pt. 02

Here’s Round Two of the People vs. The Wedge. Enjoy.

Every couple of sets, a few big waves would bring a roar of whitewash up the sand and it would hit the vertical sand lip and reach out and soak whoever was closest. Invariably, the crowd would get soaked, they would back off and within minutes would forget about the whitewash and press back up to the lip craning their necks for more surf. After a couple of hours of watching this happen, I saw a monster set approach, ran back behind the crowd and managed to snap a quick sequence of shots of the people who had again forgotten that the big waves crashing meant big whitewash coming.

Sometimes its hard to tell how big the waves are in the photos, but this one shows the size pretty nicely; those little specs at the bottom of the wave are bodysurfers’ heads.

I love my children way too much to be doing what this parent was doing – posing their kid in front of the sand lip for ‘fun’ photos; I hope they got the pix they wanted because they almost lost a treasure…

  1. William The Great –

Thanks, man! I’ve been after photos like these forever – big surf, good camera in hand, people out, amazing feats… it was all there on Monday… I could’ve stayed there all day shooting… good to hear from you – all well in Seattland? Heard you guys are getting some nutty weather up there as well…

  2. Yeah, man, they are nuts… my Uncle Bill broke his back at the Wedge a looong time ago… he recovered, but that was enough to make me say “No thanks…” Major respect to the guys and girls who paddle out there, though… I don’t know if I could do it… I watched one guy try to get in and he got fed sand at the shore break for about 6 or 7 minutes before he gave up… he came out bravely with a smile, but you could tell the effort was herculean and he was beat…

  3. which uncle?? come on… this is EXACTLY where you want Christian Keoni to learn…no pain no gain bradah!
